Game Recap

It was new school versus old school. Although all men in this game had played at The Sac before (all four of 'em!!), only two were known as real "veterans." Fitting that those vets were able to pull out the narrow victory.

Mark Montgomery's return was a successful one...at least from the plate.

Returning legends Mark Montgomery and Greg Creighton defeated Adam Eberhardt and Phil Hansing 7-6 in what initially looked to be a massacre but later turned into a nail-biter.

Mark Montgomery debuted back in 1997 and was the first player ever to crack the elusive 200 AB barrier (1999). His teammate, Greg Creighton, debuted full-time in 1998 and retired after the 2001 season with some impressive pitching numbers. Considering he debuted at the ripe age of 48, it came as a surprise.

Adam Eberhardt is the younger brother of Jason Eberhardt, who won the 1998 Rookie of the Year. Adam himself played in ONE game in 1998, but went 3-8 in that game with 2 HRs. He also played in WiffleFest, our school-wide tournament back in 1998. His teammate Phil Hansing also competed in that tournament but actually has no career ABs in our LEAGUE.

Nevertheless, the chips were down for Montgomery-Creighton before the game started. Mark had to be cajoled into playing since he had recently thrown his back out under mysterious circumstances. After some heavy brow-busting by the Commish, he agreed, reluctantly, to step onto the field. Greg, as a near-54 year old, has been showing the signs of age since hitting 50. He hasn't exactly gotten any quicker from his "frightenenly not quick" 2001 persona.

Luckily, neither of them had to do much running in the first inning as Phil walked in a couple runs and Mark picked up an RBI single. Greg then stepped to the mound and showed some flashes of brilliance. Having not swung a bat since who cares when, Phil and Adam were not ready for strikes at their ankles or to all corners of the huge zone, which Greg was using liberally.

After fireballer Adam breezed through the second, Phil hit a two-run shot off Mark to cut the lead to 3-2. But then he realized he had to pitch again, and things looked dark all of the sudden. Phil issued a few more walks and allowed a homerun apiece to both Mark and Greg during a four run inning that saw all semblance of intrigue slip through the cracks. Especially after Greg dealed another impressive inning of work in the bottom of the third.

Adam once again shut down the bats, and with Mark on the mound, Phil shook off his pitching woes and made things interesting. He took Mark deep two more times, both two-run shots, and cut the lead to 7-6. However, after Mark walked Adam to bring Phil up with a walk-off two-run shot within grasp (and #4 of the game to boot), Phil simply grounded out straight to Greg to end the game.

Due to the fact that no player on either team had a good game from both sides, picking an MVP was difficult. So we wussed out and gave co-MVP honors to Mark (for his 4-6, 5 RBI game) and Greg (for his two "make-it-look-easy" no-hit innings).

Preview

We're opening the doors (briefly) for those who turned their back on us and giving them one more day in the sun. If you played at all in this league, EVER (and we're counting our local tournament, WiffleFest '98), consider this your invitation. It could be 2 on 2 or 6 on 6, although we highly doubt it will be 6 on 6. You might see Nate Stuempfig. Or maybe Jordan Mallory. Hell, maybe Matt Holmberg will show up!! The possibilities are endless, and as soon as we get confirmations of names, we'll post them.

Or maybe we won't.

But it could be your one (and/or last) chance to see Aaron Kemper lace them up and hit The Sac. Have you only HEARD about how bad a pitcher Bob Banos was? Have you always wanted Evan Markey to add to his career AB total of 27? Well, maybe on Sunday some dreams will come true.

Speaking of dreams, let's give it to Darnell Uhland to take it home with his personal dream for the day:

"The surprise game of the year. Eight players from the past agree to come, but only four show up, Adam Eberhart, Greg Creighton, Mark Montgomery, and Josh Bartholomew. As they appear to duke it out in a 2 on 2 game, a black Escalade with smoke coming out of it approaches. A sign stating "We Got Next" is seen on the driver's side door. Exiting from the Escalade is none other than Luke Carriere, Anthony Sanzone (With a cigarette), Aaron Kemper (With a resurrected black bat), and Jeff Register as they follow their leader Terry Creighton fresh from Japan. The biggest 4 on 4 game of the league's history commences.
Final Score: Old School Road Warriors: 21, Old Timers: 0"

Hey, it could happen.
