Plummer's training pays off in 2003 Rookie Game

His trainers must know what they're doing, because Pat Plummer had himself a day at the 2003 All-Star Weekend.

John Robins went 4-8, but gave up four earned runs during the 2003 Rookie Game.

Video proof showed that Pat was taking this stretch of the season very seriously. Alongside two hardcore trainers with unusual accents, Pat was allegedly training like never before in order to be primed for not only the 2003 Rookie Game, but the final 3rd of the regular season as well. If the Rookie Game is any indication, he got his money's worth and could be a player to watch as we head towards the end of the 2003 season.

Teamed with regular season teammate Curtis Henning, Pat went 6-9 with 2 HRs and led his team to a 6-1 victory over Matt Smith and John Robins, who was replacing regular season teammate Bill Rozak. The game didn't start off all roses for Plummer though, who surrendured a one-out solo homerun to Robins in the top of the 1st. He got Smith and Robins to strike out though to end the inning.

Smith was dealing in the bottom of the inning. He matched Plummer's total of three strikeouts, and aside from a walk to Pat, was perfect.

Henning, the best pitcher in the game statistically, got himself into a jam early, allowing three straight one-out singles to load the bases. However he quickly got Smith to ground into an inning-ending double play that may have turned the tide of the game.

In the bottom of the second, Pat tied the game up with a leadoff homerun, which Curtis followed with a single opposite way. After Pat singled opposite way, Curtis took Robins deep for a three-run job that put his team up 4-1. Pat doubled immediately after, and after getting two straight outs, Robins walked the bases loaded, but got Curtis swinging to end the inning.

Pat Plummer (right) was named the game's MVP.

Pat quickly got into a jam in the top of the third, issuing a leadoff walk and then two-out double to put men on second and third. Robins ripped the ball up the middle, but Pat made an outstanding open-your-eyes-next-time snag to record the groundout, save a run--maybe two--and end the inning.

He then led off the bottom of the inning with another solo homerun, which Curtis duplicated. Pat added two more singles, but Curtis couldn't capitalize off Smith and the inning ended with the score 6-1. Curtis then allowed two straight singles to lead off the fourth, but another nice play got a force out at third and two Ks ended the game.

Plummer was awarded MVP honors for the game, expectedly, since he picked up more hits in this game (6) than he has all season to date (5). We'll see if this translates in the regular season. It's not like the Warriors really need another bat in the lineup, do they? Robins had a decent day at the plate, going 4-8 and only striking out once.

Preview

It's actually a team battle this year in the Rookie Game, which returns after a year-long absense. In 2002, we couldn't play the game because we didn't have enough qualified rookies. Let me put it this way: of those who DID qualify, Jeff Register was ranked #2. That's not the case this year as we have four competent or even--GASP!--talented rookies.

As opposed to the All-Star Game, the stats between the two teams vary. Smith and Rozak dominate the hitting numbers, but then Henning and Plummer look awesome when it comes to pitching. Which skill will come out on top? Many say that good pitching will beat good hitting 9 times out of 10, but most theories get tossed out the window when you're at The Sac and it's 104 degrees outside.

Dr. Rapp is unsure how to compare these two teams. Take a look.

Player/Celeb Picks!

Look at me, I'm sad! And insecure! And my music sucks! But i'm wearing a halloween mask, so people buy my albums! God bless America. They don't fall for this kinda shit in Europe. Only in America baby! The land where anyone with a gimmick can make money! Speaking of gimicks, I think Pat Plummer's "Oh look at me I'm so horrible at hitting" gimmick is brilliant. He and Curtis will come out on top! -- Some guy from Slipknot
Road Warriors over Playerz 16-5. All-Stars will beat rookies any day. Playerz do show
promise though. Bill hits the porch in right, Curtis hits the roof in right center. Bootsie comes to life as he exhibits what's left to come for the second half. -- Darnell Uhland
Road Warriors vs. Playerz. Normally, with full teams, this game is decidedly unfair. In the 2003 Rookie Game, it's very even. I really can't pick a winner, but for the sake of this stupid website, I'll go with the Playerz in extra innings. -- Joey Creighton
Uhh, how ya doin'? I don't know anyone in this league, but this guy working for wiffleball2k.com is asking for my predictions for the rookie game. Well, considering I don't know anything about this league or the players involved, I'm just going to take a wild guess and go with...what'shisname...Matt Smith? Yeah, and that Larry Walker-looking fellow. Bill Rozak. I like Larry Walker, so i figure Bill Rozak must be good. It's all i have to go off! Ok, good luck with your little page. -- Some guy

While out spreading the word of wiffleball to the aborgines for the past couple years, I was never able to access this site and see how it grew after I stopped writing for it. Having said that, I think Curt Henning and Pat Plummer with defeat Mark Smith and Bob Rozak. -- Donnie Jeffcoat

We not really lesbians, but it funny to watch you american mail get excited. Why you get excited, yet replused by two males kising? We looking YOU, Matt Smith!! On top of that, you hav no chance to win homeruns contset. Curtis Henning all the way. if we were no lesbian, we wood say he CUTE ;) Bye are album! Joey did! -- Those Russian Lesbians
Curt and Pat will win, mainly because Rozak won't have the edge. He won't really care, while Henning will probably care too much. Final score: 7-2 -- Dean Evans

Notes: The first "one on one on one" game since 1994 wasa total wash. Batters hit by themselves, getting one full inning against each pitcher. Mickey's three-run homerun in his last ups was enough to win this horrible, horrible game.
