(Terry and Clint) vs. (Joey and Jeff M)

Clint Wattenberg made his debut today with this game, the first 2 on 2 game of the year. Joey and Jeff were able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the first with a single by Joey. After getting Tery and Clint to bat through two 1-2-3 innings, Joey connected for a two-run homerun that would put he and Jeff up 3-0. In the top of the fourth, Jeff Morrison got himself into a jam on the mound after surrenduring three straight singles. However, he got Clint to pop out, and then struck out Terry, then Clint again, to secure the win. Final Score: 3-0.

(Casey, Derek, and Clint) vs. (Jeff M, Terry, and Scott)

Jeff Morrison would come right back to the mound here, as he worked the top of the first. The first three runners got on again, and Jeff was again in a no out, bases-loaded jam. He struck out Casey, but luck wouldn't happen twice in a row, as Derek Byrd took him yard to hit his third of the year. The grand slam started things off with a bang. However, with Derek on the mound in the bottom of the second, Jeff would get some revenge. He and Scot both hit homeruns, Jeff's being a three run shot in a six runn inning that saw them take over the lead 6-4. With Scott on the mound the top of the third, Casey would cut the lead to 6-5 when he took a Scott curve to deep left for his sixth of the season. Then, in the top of the fourth, Byrd struck again, taking Jeff yard again, this time twice in the inning, to overtake the lead 8-6. The celebration would be short lived however. In the bottom half of the inning, Scott hit a solo shot off Casey to cut the lead to 8-7. He would later take a two-out walk and was followed with a single by Jeff. Terry then walked to the plate with an 0-6 game thus far, and took Casey to the opposite way with a three run, game-winning homerun, his third of the year. Final Score: 10-8.
Game rating: **** (high-octane offenses, out-of-knowhere hitting performances, and another walk-off homerun by Terry made this game memorable)
Key Performances:
Derek Byrd: 5-7, 3 HR's, 7 RBI's
Scott Carmichael: 4-6, 2B, 2 HR's
Terry Creighton: 1-7, 3rd GW HR of season

(Mike, Derek, Scott, Clint) vs. (Joey, Casey, Eric, and Jeff M)

Mike Walsh made his rookie debut here. After Joey worked a 1-2-3 inning to start the game, Casey hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first. Clint came back with a homerun off Casey in the top of the second and Scott hit a two-run homerun in the top of the third to help their team take the lead 3-2. Joey tied it up in the bottom of the inning when he took a Scott fastball over the center field wall for a solo shot. Then Jeff Morrison came to the mound again. In the top of the fourth, he gave up six runs, culminating in a grand slam by Clint that saw the 3-3 game turn into a 9-3 game. Joey hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth, but at that point, it was meaningless. Final Score: 9-5.
Game rating: **3/4 (This game was shaping up to be historic until the ugly fourth inning that blew it wide open)
Key Performances:
Clint Wattenberg: 3-6, Grand Slam, 5 RBI's
Jeff Morrison: 1 INN, 6 ER, Loss

(Jeff M, Mickey, Casey, Joey) vs. (Nate, Derek, Eric, Scott)

Mike Walsh led the game of with his first career homerun. He then came to the mound in the bottom of the inning and was taken yard twice by Casey, erasing the lead quickly. Casey would add another solo shot in the bottom of the third to add to his team's lead. BUT, with Casey on the mound, trying to nail down the win, Derek Byrd did it again, hitting a solo shot, and then a two-run shot to give his team a 4-3 lead. Mike was then able to get Eric to pop out, Darnell to strike out, and Casey to pop out to end the game. Final Score: 4-3.
Game rating: ***1/2 (Derek and Casey proved that this day belonged to them offensively as they basically played themselves. Derek's 2 homeruns in the last inning to win the game was an emphatic way to end the day)
Key Performances:
Derek Byrd: 2-5, 2 HR's
Casey Sylvester: 3-6, 3 HR's, 2 INN, 4 ER's, Loss

Notes: Today's games were exceptional. All games stand out in my mind as being "good", with two of them possibly being considered "great". Innumerable lead changes created by explosive and timed offenses lead to exciting games for all in attendance. Derek Byrd was the showcase, as he hit SIX HR's and drove in TWELVE runs. Folks, the guy had only four homeruns his entire CAREER coming into today. Casey Sylvester continued his trek to his first-ever All-Star game as he overcame a rough day on the mound by going 7-20 with five homeruns, pushing his season total to ten, only one short of his personal season record. He's also hitting a nice .359, slightly above his personal high of .269. Clint Wattenberg didn't dissapoint either, as he threw four scoreless innings, hit .292, and jacked two homeruns, one of which was a grand slam. Jeff Morrison was absolutely destroyed from the mound, but hit like a machine, going 8-19 with his fifth homerun of the year, equalling last year's total for him in 94 less at bats. It seems to me that the guys who are showing the league some loyalty are being rewarded with significant improvement. Go figure, huh?
