2000 Bi-Weekly Report (7-7-00)
My god is this late. It's become the Bi-Monthly
report, to my embarrassment. To the two people
who read this, I'm sorry for taking so long, but
things came up. I'll try not to fall so far behind,
but it's hard to stay motivated when you know
no one's reading. Keep in mind I'm writing this
late Thursday night (early Friday morning), so
by the time you read this, it will be out of date,
what with the All-Star Weekend and all. Again,
sorry.
All-Star Weekend Looms Over
Once a year, this site rolls out the red carpet for the players
in this league who have proven themelves on the field with the annual
All-Star Weekend, a celebration of talent. This year looks to be
an entertaining one as Scott, Casey, and Terry take on Joey, James,
and Mickey in the showcase. Seth Yoder and Darnell Uhland will be
taking on Mickey Kendall and Bruce Longacre in the Rookie Game,
and eight sluggers will take part in the homerun derby. Sadly, the
Women's Game will not be played, as the interest was "too little,
too late". Katie Crabb, the party guilty of bringing the game
about, will not be in town this weekend, and Sara Christensen and
Amber Stephensen, two players who would have possibly been playing,
are working, leaving only Claire Jauregui and Desi Alexander to
play. Claire got a couple friends to express interest, but it was
after the day was set and planned, so they won't be playing. My
apologies to those who were looking forward to the game.
Still, what we have looks to be somewhat competitive and we could
be in store for two good, close games, and a competitive homerun
derby. But then again, you never know.
June Ends Successfully
For the most part, June was a success for this league, a league
not accustomed to playing four times in one month. I still enjoy
the league and the game, and no, will still not buy the new Kid
Rock album. My sincere thanks go out to Derek Byrd and his family
for allowing the league to play at their house twice. I hope the
complaints were few and far between, or, better off, non-existant.
Playing four times in one month at The Sac was simply not possible.
Many players had successful months as well. Jeff Morrison continued
hitting the ball well, hitting .381 in the month (24-63). Derek
Byrd hit 10 homeruns in the month (in only 56 AB's), and Casey Sylvester
hit 9 out (in only 46 AB's). Clint Wattenberg made his debut and
was able to play in all four gamedays, playing in all four games
every time out, and compiled a miniscule 1.71 ERA. If he was here
right now, he'd be in the All-Star Game. Congrats Clint.
Playoff News
--Terry
Creighton is number one in the standings, with a 7-4 mark.
--Scott
Carmichael quietly went 2-1 nearly every time out, and has
improved to 13-9.
--Jeff
Morrison is number two in the standings, at 15-10.
--James
Vassar is now numero three, with a 9-6 mark.
News and Rumors
--Bruce
Longacre is looking to be on the outs with the league. He's
apparently unhappy with his play and with the actions of a player
or two or three who will remain nameless. He has agreed to finish
his season in the Rookie Game alongside Mickey Kendall and afterwards,
will quit the league. I think this is the third rookie this year
to quit. What am I doing wrong?
--Terry
Creighton has been saying that he's found a flaw in his swing
that has kept him from being able to hit slower pitchers well. He's
hoping his strategy works so that he can put some more numbers into
his offensive stats, rather than only relying on his excellent pitching
to get him where he needs to go (deep into playoffs).
--Voting for May's Play of the Month is over (or
near-over). Thanks to all who voted, and June's voting will be up
shortly...for those who vote. Those who don't vote can lick 'em,
and those who can't vote need to get rid of AOL.
--The special All-Star Weekend Section for the page
was scrapped, due to lack of time, help, and...that's about it.
So instead, we simply put out the normal section. Sorry for building
it up (if you don't know what I'm talking about, you don't read
these regularly), but it's tough to keep some stuff looking hot
when 33% of your workforce retires...I mean quits. This site is
rather large, and Omar and Donnie have NO web knowledge, except
how to critique.
--There are a LOT of pitchers with ERA's in the
2.00's. Will this continue throughout the end of the season? I don't
think so. Bruce was the first of what I believe to be at least a
few pitchers whose ERA's will climb above 3.00.
--Again...next gameday for me is July 8th. For all
of you it's either July 16th or July 23rd.
--See ya.
