2001 Bi-Weekly Report (8-16-01)

Apologies suck

I mean let's be realistic...they mean nothing to either of us.

Big(gest) Weekend Approaching

The season is taking shape as we head into the final two regular-season gamedays. The Holy Whites have all but guaranteed themselves a trip to the finals while the Horsemen have all but guaranteed the #2 spot with their clutch five-game win streak. However, there is still a race for the third spot. Sure, the Y&R are 2.5 games back of Wiffolution, but at the next gameday, they see each other in perhaps the biggest doubleheader of the season. If the Y&R can sweep, we have ourselves a ball game so to speak. If Wiffolution can pull off at least a split, catching them will be tough for the Y&R to do. If Casey Sylvester shows up, unlike last week, the Y&R will definitely have their work cut out for them, since Jeff and Dean were getting on base at will Sunday, combining to go 14-36 (.389) with only two homeruns. Throw Casey in that mix, and you have the potential of seeing a few three or four-run shots.

That double dip will be at The Sac, and on the other field, the current #1 and #2 teams go at it in their final two regular-season games against each other. Wins and losses aren't of so much importance, since both teams have clinched a playoff spot. The focus will be on the two 7+ year vets, Scott Carmichael and Joey Creighton. Scott's current ERA of 0.65 is slightly ahead of Joey's record-setting 0.73 mark from last season. Ever the prideful man, Joey has promised dedicating the day to hitting Scott hard enough to save his ERA record. Scott has been all but unhittable this season, and getting more than one run off him seems all but impossible. If anyone can though, it would be Joey.

Unless you're only a fan of the Road Warriors, this upcoming gameday should hold some interest to you.

Good/Bad news for 2002 rookie hopefuls

Expansion teams are becoming less and less likely as more players are anticipating not being able to play next season. Terry is pretty sure to miss the season as he'll be in school in Seattle, leaving Darnell to be the captain. Clint Wattenberg of the Horsemen has stated that training for wrestling in Chico is like trying to pick up hot chicks in Canada (you just can't do it) and says that he'll probably only be here for like two weeks in the summer. Captain Joey Creighton would probably drop Clint if this was true for someone more available. Scott Carmichael is currently worried about whether or not Mike Walsh will be here as well. What does this all mean? Well, it's both good and bad for our 2002 rookie hopefuls. The good being we'll have lots of slots open for you to play on. The bad being that you'll likely be replacing some very talented players and that when you don't play to their level right away, you'll be made fun of. Reasons like this are why players like Joey Creighton and Scott Carmichael are thinking of one last attempt to get Mark Montgomery back into the league, who retired in 2000 when out league was probably at its worst (in terms of player attitudes and on/off-field problems).

Playoff watch

--The Holy Whites (22-8) have six games left and hold a four game lead over the Horsemen (19-13).
--Wiffolution (14-16) has fallen four back of the Horsemen and will be trying to stave off the Y&R (11-18).
--The Road Warriors are two games back of the Y&R, and believe me when I say Terry and Darnell are not quitting on moving out of last place.

News and Rumors

--Joey recently raised his batting average above .400, going 7-10 in his most recent game, bumping him up to .401. He is currently .0001 ahead of Scott. With a .405 mark in 1998, and two consecutive .401 marks in '99 and '00, respectively, Joey is gunning for a fourth consecutive .400 season. He has the current record, of three straight.

--Where was Seth Yoder and Casey Sylvester at the latest gameday? Well, no one knows for sure, but sources are guessing that Seth was playing hookey because he wasn't strong enough to pull himself out of bed after what was likely a weekend full of booze and debauchery. As for Casey...well, sources are assuming Casey was too stupid to realize he had a game that day. Lucky for Wiffolution, Y&R forfeited what would have been an important game for both teams.

--With the knowledge that this could very well be his last season for awhile, Terry Creighton seems to be making sure his name is not forgotten for awhile. He's crossed 30 homeruns for the season and is hitting a robust .346. Can you say Most Improved candidate? To guys like Scott and Joey, the way Terry is hitting now is the way he was thought to hit his entire career. Scott is not shy about admitting he doesn't care too face Terry's bat, even when Terry was his old ".230ish" self. Point to his new "Ichiro-esque" swing, his increased confidence, his weight loss, or all three as sources for his success. It doesn't matter...the guy is, as Engelberg was in the Bad News Bears, "murdering the ball."

--Eric Christensen nearly got in an accident after his game with the Road Warriors. Eric blindly pulled into his lane, apparently forgetting to check his rear-view mirrors for possible incoming cars. Lucky for Eric, the other driver was much better than he at driving and applied the brakes before Eric got what he had coming. Does this kid do anything well??

--Start thinking about who you think deserves each of our season-ending awards. We are aware that the season is not over, but the voting will begin BEFORE the playoffs, so stop complaining and start thinking. The categories you will be asked to vote on are:

MVP
Cy Young
Most Improved Player of the Year
Rookie of the Year
Best Looking Player in the league
Biggest Disappointment of the Year
...and maybe more, as we think of them

--Current goings-on in the message board are as follows:
1. A lot of people are insisting of talking non-Wiffleball 2001-related subjects inside the "Wiffleball 2001" folder.
2. A thread regarding ideas for our 2002 season degenerated into another Benny Blanco-Tonedog argument.
3. Lots of people talking about the women of the WWF. Apparently, small breasts are useless!
