Post Gameday Points II

Gameday #2 has passed us by and we're still without our first forfeit! How long will the dream continue?

With that, here are my points:

First on most minds is probably the Road Warriors. They're 5-1, people. Last year, I remember talking with Darnell after his team went 0-3 on the day, dropping to 2-9. Times were different then. They beat the Holy Whites twice Sunday, both times in their last ABs. Pat Plummer comes up big with a GW double, then Dave Cain hits a GW double in the second game. And why not, Curtis Henning hits a GW HR in the third game against the Playerz. Are they the best team in the league? Yes. I thought they'd slowly grow into a playoff team, but they are already above and beyond that. People can say "oh wait until the summer when the Holy Whites and Horsemen heat up" and to that I say "wait until Dave Cain heats up."

Still, the Whites are good. They seem to have problems in low-scoring games, and with the weather the way it was Sunday (overcast and windy at the Byrd House), they couldn't rely on the big homeruns. The playoffs will be held in September, not October like last year, and the weather will be warm.

The defending champions looked vulnerable. They hit well, but their pitching struggled. Eric Christensen showed improved accuracy last season, but looked helpless on the mound at times Sunday, and Joey Creighton got rocked again. Still, I'm sure they're happy Seth Yoder is above .250...for the time being. They'll welcome Byrd to their lineup as soon as they can get him. They're probably hoping for a debut by this Sunday, as they take on the Warriors in a doubleheader.

And what's the deal with that 9.00 AB/K ratio for Yoder?

Brnk = Batting Rank (overall)
Prnk = Pitching Rank (overall)
ORnk = Overall Rank (rookies)
Ornk determined by summing both Brnk and Prnk. In the event of a tie, player with more ABs is given priority.

The Rookie of the Year race is a complete toss-up (right). The odd thing will be the 2003 Rookie Game, because three competent rookies will NOT be playing. And really, the way these guys are looking, the roster for that game will change every gameday. As it is now, the Rookie Game matchup will feature the two Road Warriors rooks versus two of the Playerz rooks. Let's hope it changes. I'll update this table after each gameday.

Before Darnell left, he gave his team a goal for when he'd be gone: Go 12-3. Darnell's going to be gone for 5 gamedays (15 games), unless he decides to return for a weekend or two. At the time, it looked like a lofty goal. Now...it looks like Darnell's a genius.

Mike Walsh has already passed last year's AB total. And he's still not injured. He did finally give up a run, surrenduring a homerun to Joey Creighton in his third inning of the day. Then again, it WAS the only hit he gave up. He may not like his .125 average, but that 0.67 ERA probably looks pretty sweet.

Can Carmichael go a whole season without giving up a run? And do it with the roster this league has now? That would be something else.

Speaking of giving up no runs, I hate to jinx them, but both Dave Cain and Curtis Henning have 0.00 ERAs. They've combined for 16 IP, only 8 hits, and 28 Ks. I doubt Darnell could forsee those numbers, especially from Cain.
