| Not Many People Eager To Swing For Santa
Only 10 hits in 10 inning, 1-0 epic
With record attendance by both players and fans, offense decided to sleep in as the formerly great league looked like one of those east coast
reject leagues for a few hours. Game 1 of the 4th edition of Swingin' For Santa ended after Joey Creighton grounded into a game-ending double
play to hand his team a 1-0 loss. The game was the longest the league had ever seen since its inception in 1994.
Joey's team, the Heavenly Bodies, eeked out only two singles in the game and only once got a runner past 2nd base. Unfortunately, their opponents,
Money Inc., couldn't muster much more themselves as pitchers posted exemplary numbers. Money Inc. picked up 8 singles in their 10 innings, but struck
out 17 times as they too couldn't get a runner to sniff home plate until the final frame.
With Mickey Kendall on the mound in the 10th for the Heavenly Bodies, Scott Carmichael, Mark Montgomery, and Darnell Uhland accepted three straight
free passes. Dave Cain then grounded to fielder Eric Christensen, who deftly tagged third and fired to Mickey to get the double play. Unfortunately,
Scott was plated as there was no longer a force on him as a runner. Most were simply esctatic Eric cleanly fielded the ball and turned what was probably the first double play of
his career.
