The Byrd House

Opening Doubleheader
Wiffolution versus Playerz

Game 1
It was a rare day at the Byrd House as the wind blew strong straight out, and Matt Smith took advantage, having himself a day.

Matt hit seven homeruns in the doubleheader, including four off Matt Plummer (three in a row at one point) as the Playerz swept the doubleheader.

Matt's homerun binge didn't actually begin until the top of the third inning during Game 1. Against Dean, he walked, then went yard for a 2-run shot. Morrison then got revenge of sorts by taking Smith yard in the bottom of the inning, but that's all Wiffolution could get. Smith added another 2-runner in the fourth off Plummer and the Playerz' pitching was solid en route to the victory.

Final Score: 4-1, Playerz

Game 2
Then Matt really got started.

After tossing a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, Matt Smith took fellow rookie (and damn good pitcher) Matt Plummer deep three times in a row, giving the Playerz a quick 4-0 lead. By Smith's admission, he's a fastball hitter, and by our admission, Plummer is a fastball pitcher. With the wind blowing out though, Plummer's fastball became just a bit more hittable than it usually does at the wind-affected Byrd House.

Smith wasn't done, however.

Off Dean in the bottom of the third, he connected for two more as the Playerz suddenly saw themselves with an 8-0 lead.

Robins would give up a bomb to Dean Evans in the fourth, but it was more of the "mercy" variety as the Playerz came away with an improbable split and left Wiffolution to scratch their heads.

Final Score: 8-1, Playerz

Nitecap
Horsemen versus Holy Whites

Unlike Wiffolution, the Road Warriors rode into town and gave the Playerz a taste of their own medicine.

Having survived two full games in horrible pitching conditions with only giving up two runs, the Playerz saw a four-headed, first-place beast in the Road Warriors, who were in no mood to let Matt Smith have any fun.

It almost didn't happen that way though, as the Playerz (after another 1-2-3 inning from Smith) put up three runs off Dave Cain. No homeruns were hit, not surprisingly since Cain rarely gives you anything above your ankles, but the Playerz showed another talent--hitting oppo. They picked up five singles and a walk in the inning.

If anything, it only woke up the Warriors.

After having been held to only two runs at The Sac, team captain Darnell rallied the troops by getting fired up and screaming at teammates to do the same. After all, you don't get htting conditions like these everyday, especially at The Byrd House.

The team responded by torching John Robins for eight runs in the top of the second inning.

Dave Cain led off the inning with what most considered an unbelievable shot to left field. According to those around, the homerun could have been the first-ever shot to completely leave the confines of the Byrd House and down into the creek that runs behind the field. The fence that separates the field from the creek sits about 130 feet from home plate. A large tree in left-center was the only thing that kept the ball from doing so.

Pat Plummer fed off that, slapping a single opposite way for his first hit of the day, which was immediately followed by a game-tying homerun by Darnell. Then Curtis Henning homered. Then Dave hit another deep bomb way up in the tree, making it back-to-back-to-back. Then Pat singled again. Then Darnell singled. Then Curtis hit a three-run shot.

Then Dave and Pat struck out, and Darnell grounded out. Eight runs, eight hits, and then 1-2-3.

Matt Smith did it again though in the bottom of the inning, taking Pat Plummer deep for his eighth homerun of the day. Pat would battle back and strike out the next three batters.

After a scoreless third, the Warriors came to bat against Robins again and put up four more runs, all thanks to four solo homeruns, two apiece for Darnell and Curtis.

Curtis then breezed through the bottom of the inning, emphatically striking out Matt Smith to end the game.

Final Score: 12-4, Road Warriors
