The Sac/Byrd House

Doubleheader
Road Warriors versus Playerz
(these two games were played Saturday at The Sac as due to a scheduling conflict; the nitecap was played Sunday at the Byrd House)

Game 1
They spent all their energy worrying about Bill Rozak, but it ended up being Matt Smith who beat them in the end.

In a rare August afternoon that saw a light drizzle come down throughout the game, Curtis Henning and Darnell Uhland entered the final inning with a 4-2 lead, but couldn't come away with the victory, dropping Game 1, 5-4.

Entering the final frame, the tandem had actually held Rozak, holding him to a 2-7, one HR game, which was a main reason they led after three full.

They struck first, going back-to-back off Smith, but Rozak answered in the bottom half, taking Darnell deep for a two-run, game-tying shot. Thanks to four walks, the Warriors put across two more runs in the third, and Curtis got through the bottom with no runs allowed.

Smith gave up two singles in the fourth, but no runs, and then led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot. Bill walked, and then Matt took Darnell deep again for a walk-off job to give his team the win.

Final Score: 5-4, Playerz

Game 2
In a rare instance, free passes became a part of a Curtis Henning inning, which was what ultimately led to the Playerz picking up the sweep over the Road Warriors.

The Warriors again entered the final inning with the lead, but again were not able to nail the door closed.

Darnell hit a two-run shot off Bill in the bottom of the first to give his team an early lead. After atriking out three straight times, Bill finally connected in the top of the second off Curtis, cutting the lead to 2-1. The teams traded scoreless third innings before the Playerz were able to scrap together runs off Henning in the final inning.

Bill led off with a single that got by Darnell, who slipped on the still-wet concrete. Matt then picked up a walk, as did Bill, which loaded the bases. Matt drove a single opposite way, scoring one and tying the game. After Bill struck out, Matt doubled home two, before he and Bill both struck out to end the inning.

The Warriors then went down 1-2-3 in the final inning and were swept for the first time this season.

Final Score: 4-2, Playerz

Nitecap
Wiffolution versus Playerz

Matt Plummer was in no mood to repeat history, and the entire Wiffolution lineup continued at their torrid pace as they domniated the red-hot Playerz, 8-3.

At his last gameday before breaking his hand, Plummer gave up four homeruns to Matt Smith as Wiffolution dropped both ends of a double dip to the Playerz. Nothing close to similar came to pass Sunday as Plummer had his way with not only Smith, but red-hot Bill Rozak with two innings of one-hit ball.

It didn't hurt that all three members of Wiffolution went deep either, as they homered at least once in every inning.

Jeff got it going in the top of the first, hitting a solo shot off Bill. Dean would later single home another run as Wiffolution went up 2-0. Matt tossed the first scoreless inning, giving up only a single to Bill, and Wiffolution tacked on three more runs off Matt Smith, with Plummer going deep and Morrison hitting #2 of the game.

Bill took Morrison deep in the second, but after the Playerz picked up back-to-back walks, Morrison picked up back-to-back strikeouts, ending the inning.

Plummer added his second homerun of the day in the third off Rozak, but the Playerz answered with two off Dean, thanks to a walk and homerun by Rozak.

Dean exacted revenge in the final frame, leading the inning off with a double and then later hitting a two-run shot off Smith to put his team up 8-3.

Plummer then cruised through a 1-2-3 inning, sealing the victory and giving Wiffolution a very important 3-0 day. He struck out 13 batters on the day in only 6 IP, which is something only people like Carmichael came claim to have done, and he was basically the only pitcher to have a good weekend (6 IP, 3 hits, 1 ER, 13 Ks, 0 BBs). If Wiffolution is to have any playoff shot, they need at least Plummer or Sylvester (or both) at every gameday from here on out.

Final Score: 8-3, Wiffolution
