May 17th, 2003
Sorry
I missed the last gameday, but let's face reality--didya even
notice I was gone? Of course not! As if I need to tell you, every
game that went down Sunday the 4th in real life was predicted
by SC Wiffleball 2003 with 97% accuracy. The game knew Carlson
was going to show, it knew RObins was gonna get smoked, and it
knew the Holy Whites and Wiffolution would get into a little tiffy
argument. Really!
Anyway,
we're back in the present, getting ready to play Gameday #6. At
The Sac we have the first-place (9-3) Road Warriors taking on
the defending champs in what will be a great doubleheader. Both
teams have all four players playing.
At
The Byrd House, Wiffolution hopes to keep their momentum going
over the struggling Playerz. After winning two of their first
three games (and surprising everyone, even SC Wiffleball 2003),
the Playerz have dropped eight of their last nine.
Now
I'm off to play the games! I'll be right back!

DOUBLEHEADER
(The Sac)
HORSEMEN versus ROAD WARRIORS
The
defending champs have to at least pick up a split from the current
#1 team. All eight players are ready to go!
The
two teams trade 1-2-3 innings in the first, but the visiting Horsemen
pick up a run in the second with an RBI single from Ian off Pat
Plummer. Pat gets redemption though, taking Joey deep in the bottom
half of the inning for a 2-run job. Ian ties the game up in the
top of the third with a solo shot, but Eric ruins the moment by
giving up five runs in the bottom of the third. Plummer hits another
one, this time a 3-runner, and Cain adds two in the onslaught.
The Horsemen battle though, tagging Darnell for four runs in the
top of the fourth, cutting the Warriors' lead to 7-6. Ian's 3-runner
leads the charge. Henning and Cain though both tag Yoder for solo
shots, giving the Warriors a 3-run cushion for the final inning.
Henning allows Ian to go yard for one, but shuts down the rest
of the lineup to secure the win.
Final Score: 9-7, Road Warriors.
Ian
Byrd picks up another RBI single to put his team on the board
early in the first inning. Plummer hits his third homerun of the
day to tie it up in the top of the second, but the Horsemen take
over from there. All four hitters for the team go yard at least
once, and they throw 3 shutout innings to keep the game from getting
interesting.
Final Score: 6-1, Horsemen.
Aftermath:
The Horsemen get the split, thanks mainly to Ian Byrd, who goes
8-10 in the doubleheader with 4 HRs. Pat Plummer finally looks
competent after a number of struggling gamedays. He goes 4-10
in the series, raising his average from .069 to .154.
DOUBLEHEADER
(The Byrd House)
PLAYERZ versus WIFFOLUTION
Keith
Carlson is starting to get into the swing of things, can he stop
the slide that the Playerz are in (1-8 in their last 9 games)?
Carlson
and Matt Plummer exchange 1-2-3 innings to start Game 1, and then
the Playerz put a world of hurt on Jeff Morrison. Robins leads
off with a single, and Smith walks. Morrison is able to get Carlson
to flyout, and then strikes out Robins, but serves one up to Smith
that nearly hits the light pole in center for a three run shot.
However, in the bottom of the third, Matt Plummer makes it all
better. He and Dean Evans go back-to-back to cut the lead to 3-2,
and after Jeff singles, Plummer does it again, taking Smith deep
to left and putting Wiffolution on top. He then comes in for the
final inning and closes the door.
Final Score: 4-3, Wiffolution.
After
the demoralizing loss in Game 1, the Playerz barely show up in
Game 2, combining for nothing more than a single and a walk through
the entire game. Dean Evans and Matt Plummer both hit solo shots
for Wiffolution as their pitching cruises to another Byrd House
victory (they're now 7-1 when playing there).
Final Score: 2-0, Wiffolution.
Aftermath:
The slide continues, as Carlson looks human. His 1-9 effort doesn't
help anyone's cause but the opponents.
HORSEMEN
versus WIFFOLUTION (The Sac)
Can
Wiffolution figure out how to win at The Sac?
Joey
Creighton, after a dismal doubleheader, starts his team off in
the bottom of the first with a solo shot off Plummer. Matt and
Morrison respond though in the top of the third by going back-to-back
off Eric and putting Wiffolution back on top. Dean Evans can't
hold the lead though as Ian Byrd hits another homerun to tie the
game up. Neither team scores in the fourth and we head to extra
innings. Yoder throws a brilliant inning for the Horsemen, and
Morrison steps to the mound for Wiffolution. He strikes out Ian,
then strikes out Yoder, but Creighton strikes Wiffolution out,
sending big walk-off homerun opposite way.
Final Score: 3-2, Horsemen.
Aftermath:
Wiffolution is now 1-6 at The Sac and 7-1 at The Byrd House.
ROAD
WARRIORS versus PLAYERZ (The Byrd House)
The
Playerz have had problems scoring, but their pitching's been okay.
Can it stay that way against the lethal Warriors?
Keith
Carlson comes alive, just as he did in Game 3 last gameday (May
4th), taking Curtis Henning deep to left. Darnell Uhalnd answers
the shot and raises the ante with a 2-runner off Keith in the
top of the second. Curtis then adds a 2-runner in the third off
Robins, putting them up 4-1. The Playerz hang tough, picking up
two hits in every single inning, but they can't come up with that
one big hit and end the day 0-3...again.
Final Score: 4-1, Road Warriors.
Aftermath:
The objective is now clear: The Playerz need some clutch. Some
RBI potential to bring the men home. They're getting on base,
they just need that one swing to clear them all up. Gee...who
can fill that role?

Misc
numbers:
Ian
Byrd simply has a day. He goes 9-13 for the day
with five bombs, but on top of that, throws 3 scoreless
innings. It's often tough to do well at both sides
of the game, especially if you're not named Scott
Carmichael.
Pat
Plummer goes 1-3 in the final game, making him 5-13
on the day, which raises his season average from
.069 (2-29) to .167 (7-42). One more day like that,
and he's quickly up to .218.
No
one will pass Scott Carmichael in homeruns on his
off-day, but a couple will start to approach him.
Ian finishes the day with 14 homeruns, Dave Cain
will now have 13, and Joey Creighton will have 12.
Dean's
two homeruns leaves him two shy of his season goal
of 10. After the day, he'll be on pace for 19.
The
2.89 AB/K ratio that the league has entering the
day will increase after the league posts a 3.14
AB/K ratio on Sunday.
The
league's .278 average entering the day will continue
its slow rise after the league goes 65-217 (.300).
The new league average will be .282.
Nine
homeruns will be hit at The Byrd House, a new high
for a gameday in 2003. At The Sac, there will be
20 bombs, giving it 75% of the league's total for
the season.

What
we have learned:
See,
I told you! Pat Plummer can ball! It's also apparent
that Dave Cain is more human than we thought. He
has 13 homeruns, but it's taken him 76 ABs, and
he's only hitting .276. Still, the Warriors must
be pleasantly surprised with his 1.56 ERA.
The
Playerz really really really really need Matt Holmberg.
With him, they're good. Without him, they're batting
practice.
Matt
Plummer may be playing much less often for Wiffolution
after Sunday's games due to summer baseball. If
so, he left (temporarily) some decent numbers: 19-68
(.279) with 8 homeruns, 13 RBIs, and a .662 slugging
percentage. And it would only get better. Oh yeah,
and don't forget his 0.95 ERA. Ouch.
Ian
Byrd is a decent hitter. For the season, he's now
hitting .518!!!! With 14 HRs in
only 56 ABs!!!!!
Return
in next week to see how Gameday 7 will go!
