May
30th, 2003 -- Darnell Uhland
Coming
into week 4, the Road Warriors led the league (7-2), the Holy
Whites were second (4-2), followed by Wiffolution (3-3), the Horsemen
(2-4), and the Playerz (3-6). Now you all may think I'm biased,
being a
player on the Road Warriors, but I'm not so drop it. I just finished
the fourth week of SC Wiffleball and
this is what happened:
Horsemen
vs. Road Warriors (2 games)
1st game
The Horsemen come out fielding a full team, but since Pat Plummer
was off doing a charitable deed, making the Road Warriors proud,
two 4 inning games were on hand. In a pitcher's duel that had
numerous innings end with runners in scoring position, Curtis
Henning hit an RBI double in the bottom of the third that plated
Dave Cain. This was all of the scoring needed and made in the
game as the Road Warriors won 1-0
2nd game
The Horsemen wanted to come out strong in game 2, but the hot
Road Warrior team was still in the way. Once again the game started
as a pitcher's duel. There was only one hit accumulated by both
teams through two innings. In the top of the third, things changed
as Cain hit a solo and two run bomb off of Joey Creighton to give
the Road Warriors a three run lead. The top of the fourth brought
no luck to the Horsemen as Curtis hit a two run shot off of Seth
Yoder, followed by a solo shot by Darnell Uhland, giving the Road
Warriors a 6-0 lead. The bottom of the inning brought hope to
the Horsemen as they led off with 3 hits, including a two run
double by Yoder, but that was all she wrote.
6-2, Road Warriors.
Horsemen vs. Wiffolution 51 (1 game)
The Horsemen's bats woke up a bit against Wiffolution in the 3rd
and final game of the day for both eams. Dean Evans and Creighton
battled each other in a slugfest as each hit three round trippers.
Creighton's last shot ended being the difference as hit a walk
off homer off Matt Plummer.
6-5, Horsemen.
Holy Whites vs. Wiffolution 51 (2 games)
1st game
The unbelievable happened in the first inning as the team of Matt
Plummer, Dean Evans, and Jeff Morrison managed to get 5 straight
hits off of Scott Carmichael, scoring 3 runs. The Holy Whites
slowly
climbed thanks to Carmichael batting every other time, with John
Deatrick. In the bottom of the third,
Carmichael appeared to break the hearts of Wiffolution, hitting
back to back dongs to take the lead.
Wiffolution's heart was too big to break though as Plummer hit
a 2 run shot in the top of the fourth, off of Deatrick.
5-4, Wiffolution.
2nd game
The Holy Whites obviously took offense to Plummer's celebrating,
because they came out in the second game scoring 7 runs in the
first inning, en route to victory.
8-0, Holy Whites.
Holy Whites vs. Road Warriors (1 game)
The Road Warriors started their quest for a 3-0 day with yet another
home run off of Carmichael by Darnell Uhland. A 3-0 day was not
to be though as Deatrick hit a 3 run bomb off of Dave Cain in
the second. The dominating pitching of the Holy Whites preserved
the lead.
3-1, Holy Whites.
Thoughts
from week 4 and season
>>Ian Byrd had 7 strikeouts in 14 ABs.
>>The Holy Whites hit 9 HRs for the day, 4 by DEATRICK.
>>The Standings: Road Warriors (9-3), Holy Whites (6-3),
Wiffolution 51 (4-5), Horsemen (3-6), Playerz (3-6).
>>The only teams that have more runs than runs against are
the Road Warriors and Holy Whites, no surprise.
>>2 out of the 3 losses from the Road Warriors and Holy
Whites are against each other.
>>When I give these stats remember, I am not biased and
the Road Warriors have played 3 more games:
>>Cain is a serious triple crown threat with HR (16, next
best is Creighton at 10), RBI (30, next best is
Creighton at 13!), and AVG. (.370) third behind Creighton (.407)
and Carmicheal (.413).
>>Henning is a man child from the mound as he possesses
a 4-0 record with a .67 ERA in 18 IP. He is third in K's (19)
behind Matt Holmberg (20) and Cain (22). He also leads the league
in doubles (8).
>>Creighton (.407, 10 HR, 13 RBI, 5.4 Kratio)and Carmicheal
(.413, 8 HR, 10 RBI, .522 OBP) are studs
offensively, as if we didn't know that.
>>Evans (3-0, 11 IP, K/4 6.55, ERA 2.18, Rating 57.05) is
surprisingly tearing it up from the mound, while
Deatrick (10 IP, K/4 6.0, ERA .80, Rating 68.79) continues to
dominate.

May
11th, 2003 -- Terry Creighton
So
I played my third gameday of SC Wiffleball and things have just
gotten a lot more interesting.
A brief history:
The first two weeks saw the Road Warriors dominate, going 5-1
while everybody tried to get their team to gell with one another.
The Holy Whites were a below-expected 3-3. Scott Carmichael was
noticably upset with that record and was heard yelling at Mike
Walsh about his poor pitching performance (3 IPs, 12 ERs). I caught
up with Scott during the Holy Whites' bye week and this is what
he had to say,
"I'm calm now, but in Week 2 we lost a series to the Road
Warriors, so you never feel good about yourself after that. We
could have beaten them too if it wasn't for Mike, but...we got
a week off so hopefully Mike can get his act together."
The Horsemen were 2-1, Wiffolution was 1-2 and Playerz were 1-5.
Dave
Cain of the Road Warriors was the man at the plate with 9 HR's
in 29 AB's with Dean Evans of Wiffolution and Eric Christensen
of Horsemen putting up some good numbers as well (sorry, don't
have those in front of me.)
Week 3:
At the Sac:
At the Sac, the Road Warriors (without Dave Cain; fielding only
Curtis Henning and Pat Plummer) swept the Horsmen (fielded by
Ian Byrd, Joey Creighton and Eric Christensen) with scores of
4-1 and 6-4. Eric Christensen gives up 6 runs in 2 innings, losing
both games. Pat Plummer picks up both wins giving him a record
of 4-0. Curtis went a respectable 7-17. I caught up with Curtis
while the Road Warriors were waiting for Wiffolution to show up
for game three and this is what he had to say.
"This is huge for us, two rookies beating the Series at the
Sac Champions? That doesn't happen often, so if we just stick
to the game plan we got going, we should beat Wiffolution no problem."
Also to note: When asked for an interview, Joey Creighton said,
"Not now, I got some business to take care of."
At the Byrd House:
Over at the Byrd House, Wiffolution (fielded by Matt Plummer,
Jeff Morrison and Dean Evans) swept the Playerz (Fielded by only
Matt Smith and John Robbins) with scores of 5-0 and 3-1. Jeff
Morrison and Dean Evans both pitched well, combining for 4.0 innings,
3 hits, 0 earned runs, 0 walks and 6 K's. Dean was a monster at
the plate, going 7-11 with 4 HR's and 5 RBI's. Both John Robbins
and Matt Smith were not looking too good after those two games.
I talked to John about the previous two games.
"It took us a little while to get going, especially since
we only got one hit in the first game, but Matt and I don't back
down, we're gonna bring our best everytime out!" Then when
I asked him for a high five...he gave me one!!!
Game 3 at the Byrd House:
So game three at the Byrd House had the Horsemen beating the Playerz
by the score of 8-5. Eric Christensen and Joey Creighton took
the game into their own hands in the third and fourth inning.
The only reason why they needed to take the game into their hands
was because Eric gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the second. Joey
then decided to go 6-6 with 3 HR's for the rest of the game (capping
off a 7-9 game with 3 Runs and 4 RBI's) along with Eric going
3-5 with 3 HR's in the final two innings (capping off a 5-9 day).
I asked Joey Creighton about his performance to which he replied,
"OOOOOOOOOOOO Whatta Rush!!!!" When I then asked him
about the pitching performance of Eric Christensen (so far in
the season going 6 IP's, 13 ER's), he responded, "So, what's
your point, we won a championship with that shitty...err...rehabilitating
arm!"
John Robbins and Matt Smith of the Playerz did lose every game,
but on the bright side, they each hit their first homerun of the
season in the last game.
Game 3 at the Sac:
So over at the Sac, the Road Warriors (so far 2-0 on the day)
took on Wiffolution 51 (so far 2-0 on the day) to what was to
be an exciting game. The series between these two was split 1-1
(going back to the first gameday) and in today's game, it went
extra innings with Jeff Morrison and Dean Evans both hitting solo
homers in the top of the 5th off of Curtis Henning. Jeff then
came into the bottom of the 5th feeling the pressure. He walked
Pat Plummer twice and with two outs, two runners on base, and
the go-ahead run coming up to the plate, Jeff stuck out Curtis
to give Wiffolution the 2-0 win. It was a pitcher's duel that
saw a total of 17 K's and with the Road Warriors only getting
one hit. I caught up with the winning pitcher, Jeff Morrison after
the game to get his comments.
"Well, I pitched 4 shutout innings, we (Wiffolution 51) only
gave up one run on the day and we won all three games, it doesn't
get much better than this...except maybe the new Zelda!"
So Wiffolution goes 3-0, raising their record to 4-2 with the
Road Warriors still 1.5 games ahead with a 7-2 record. The Holy
Whites and Horsemen are both at .500 with 3-3 records and the
Playerz are sitting at the bottom with a 1-8 record.
--Dean Evans has so far this season pitched 6 IP's and given 0
ER's along with 11 K's and 0 BB's. He has also gone 15-30 at the
plate with 5 HR's.
--Eric Christensen has gone 20-41 at the plate with 7 HR's
--Curtis Henning has pitched 15 innings so far, leading in IP's,
K's and BF. He is NOT leading in Hits (John Robbins), ER's (John
Robbins, Mike Walsh and Eric Christensen) or BB's (John Robbins).
That is saying a lot for a rookie.
Next gameday, the Playerz have the bye, so we have four quality
teams playing each other. Road Warriors and Wiffolution though,
don't play each other. They won't be playing against each other
until gameday 7, when they have a doubleheader at the Byrd House.

note: All interviews were fake.)

April

Okay,
I just hit the All-Star Weekend. The season is 2/3rds over (not
counting playoffs), so I thought now would be a good time to send
in my info.

First,
the standings. Not surprisingly, the Horsemen are on top, sporting
a 15-9 record. The Holy Whites are only two games back, at 13-11.
The Playerz are surprising everyone with a decent 12-10 mark.
Wiffolution and the Road Warriors are both tied for fourth at
10-14. Pretty even field, with all teams in the playoff hunt as
we reach the stretch run.
Now,
the good stuff...stats.
Scott
Carmichael leads the league in homeruns, with 29. Dave Cain has
23, and they are the only two over 20. Five others are in double
digits, with six other players at either 8 or 9 homeruns. I would
say the big surprise here is Eric Christensen, who has 16 homeruns
(4th in league). He also leads the Horsemen in RBIs, with 31.
I lead in doubles, as usual, with 10. It shouldn't surprise anyone
if I break the record. Dean Evans already broke the triples record.
He has 3, and is leading the league with a .388 batting average.
Carmichael is on top of batting rating with a 43.41 mark. He also
leads in ABs with 133.
Now
to the pitching. Casey Sylvester leads in ERA with a 1.93. Darnell
Uhland actually has a 1.23 ERA (and leads in many other pct. categories),
but he's only been to three gamedays and doesn't qualify. Yoder
leads in K/4 ratio with a 6.55. Matt Holmberg leads in wins, with
7. Where's Carmichael in all this? He's got a 2.40 ERA, a 5.71
K/4 ratio, is 6-5, and has a 40.22 rating. He's the only 40-40
guy so far.
The
league batting average is a relatively low .284. The league ERA
is 3.13.
So
with the All-Star Weekend approaching, lets hit that.
The
big story here is that the Horsemen have THREE representatives.
The game will be Scott Carmichael (#1), Casey Sylvester (#4),
and Eric Christensen (#6) taking on Seth Yoder (#2), Matt Holmberg
(#3), and Joey Creighton (#5). Eric's in on the sole basis of
his unbelievable hitting numbers.
The
Rookie Game will pit Matt Plummer (#1) and Curtis Henning (#4)
against Tavis Beynon (#2) and Keith Carlson (#3). All four teams
with rookies have one representative, which is kind of cool. The
Rookie of the Year race itself is rather grey. Matt Plummer is
the #1-ranked guy, but that's with a rank of 17 in batting. The
reason he's in is his rank of 3 in pitching. The top hitting rookie
is Keith (ranked #5), who is hitting .322 with 15 homeruns. On
the other hand, he's ranked 18th in pitching (4.74 ERA). All the
other rookies are right there, within striking distance. Well,
aside from maybe John Robins, who is ranked 19th in hitting and
dead last in pitching.
If
I had to make award picks right now, here they are:
MVP:
Carmichael, HW -- He has over half the team's RBIs.
Cy Young: Yoder, HM -- His 2.00 ERA is tied for
second, but his 5-1 record puts him on top of rating. Casey Sylvester
leads in ERA, but has a subpar 1-4 mark.
Rookie of the Year: Keith Carlson, PL -- I hate
to go with hitting over pitching, but his team is over .500 all
because of him.
Most Improved Player of the Year: Eric Christensen,
HM -- Is only hitting .265, but has 16 homeruns and sports a relatively-decent
ERA of 3.65. Watch out for Walsh who, despite hitting only .226,
has a great 2.48 ERA.
Defenseive Player of the Year: Me, HM -- As if
there's any argument. |
