Morrison dials 9-11

Jeff's
prayers were answered during Game 3 of the 1999 Series at
the Sac |
The first-ever
Series at the Sac, in 1999, was a thing of beauty, but no one
looked as good as Jeff Morrison did one warm night on September
30th.
It was Game
3 of the semi-final matchup between Vassar/T. Creighton and Morrison/G.
Creighton. The first game went to Morrison and G. Creighton by
a score of 6-3. It wasn't the prettiest game (Terry and James
walked 7 batters), especially next to Game 2, an extra-inning
affair that Terry hitting a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of
the fifth to give him and James a 2-1, series-tying win.
Game 3 stood
on its own. Beautiful yet ugly, Game 3 was something new altogether,
and it was the game that saw Jeff Morrison become a top-tier hitter.
Jeff went
9-11 in the game. He picked up a double, two homeruns, 7 runs
scored, and 10 RBIs. Two of his 9 hits were actually him trying
to get out, to end the massacre before it was called on a count
of darkness. He was 4-4 off James Vassar, who came off a regular
season ERA of 1.87. He started the obsession of going opposite-way.
You played him to pull? He'd slap it to right. Play him oppo?
He'd rip it down the third base line. He was on another level
that night, and because of it, he and Greg made it to the Series
at the Sac finals with a 13-3 shallacking.
One could
remember James on the mound, pissed off to no end, wondering how
this guy was hitting anyone, let alone the "greatest rookie
ever."*
