1997

The
not-so-friendly confines |
If only "Back
to the Future" was more than a mediocre movie starring a
bunch of mediocre actors. If we could turn back the hands of time
and head back to 1997, we'd fix everything.
Many of you
have all heard the story. The story of a league leaving their
cozy, wet confines of Water Baseball in 1996 and heading across
town to the unforgiving, shade-nowhere-to-be-seen confines of
The Sac, and trying (unsuccessfully) to adapt their game. You've
heard thousands of times how we only played five games, and how
all five of those games sucked. How we used TWO fielders in addition
to the pitcher, leaving hitters with nothing to do but throw bats
and watch their average plummit. How the league talent took a
nose-dive. It's not new news in the least. We won't deny that,
but it was an important part of our past.
We were able
to learn from the many mistakes of 1997 and make sure none of
it happened in 1998. Some people say it might have been a blessing
in disguise for us to experience the shit known as 1997. They
say that it was what made 1998, and the years to follow, so great.
But most of us disagree, considering 1997 to simply be a waste
of what could have been a good year. Of course, Evan Markey was
leading the league in ABs with 27, so maybe it's good we put a
halt to the season. Don't worry, that very number would be on
our "fix it" list if Doc Brown ever gets that Delorean
working again.
